Accessibility

UK Energy Data should work for everyone, whatever device you use and however you use it. This statement says how accessible the site is, what we know falls short, and how to tell us about a problem.
Our target
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. You should be able to:
- use every page and control with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline and a link to skip to the content;
- use the site on a phone as fully as on a computer;
- choose a light or dark theme, both with text contrast that meets AA;
- avoid motion: with reduced motion set on your device, movement becomes a short fade or stops;
- use a screen reader, with headings, labels and live updates announced.
How we tested
- Automated checks with axe on every page, in both the light and dark themes.
- Keyboard testing of every page, its menus and its controls.
- Each page at 390 pixels wide, the width of a typical phone.
- Each page with reduced motion turned on.
What we know falls short
- Most charts have a text summary nearby or offer their figures as a CSV download. Some complex charts, such as the region map, still rely on being seen; with a screen reader, their full detail is only in the download.
- Some chart details appear only when you point at or tap a chart, which is easier with a mouse or touch than with a keyboard.
- The table on the data sources page is wide and scrolls sideways on a phone.
- Live figures come from third parties. When a source is slow or down, the page says so, but the figures it would have shown are missing until it recovers.
- Links to official reports and data publishers take you to their websites, which we do not control.
We are working on these and will update this statement as they are fixed.
Report a problem
If something on the site is hard to use, or you need information in another format, tell us through the contact page. Say which page and what happened. We aim to reply within five working days.
