Questions
Grams of CO₂ per kWh of electricity. Lower means more wind, solar, nuclear and hydro, and less gas.
Usually around midday in spring and summer, and overnight when the wind is up and demand is low. The dirtiest hours are the 07:00 to 09:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 peaks.
Demand rises at mealtimes and in the evening, and gas plants meet most of the extra.
A dishwasher cycle uses about 1.5 kWh: roughly 300 g of CO₂ at 200 g/kWh, or 75 g at 50 g/kWh.
Only on a time-of-use tariff such as Agile, where clean hours are often cheap too.
NESO and the University of Oxford model it from weather and planned generation. It is best for the next few hours, and measured values replace it once a half hour has passed.
A lot: Scotland is usually far cleaner than the south of England. Choose your area at the top of this page, or see the region map.
