Cookies and storage
Last updated 8 October 2026
UK Energy Data sets no cookies. It keeps a few things in your browser’s storage:
- Your theme
- Light or dark, saved when you switch, so each page opens the way you left it. Saved under
theme. - Your postcode area
- The first half of a postcode you enter and its network area, so every page that asks uses the same one. Saved under
green-signal-area. - My home
- The details you choose to give on the My home page (tariff, how you pay, yearly use, heating, electric car, solar panels and home battery), so the tools start from your figures. Saved under
my-homeuntil you choose Forget everything. - Tool settings you last used
- The Charge tonight planner and the solar export estimate remember your last inputs. Saved under
uked:tonightanduked:solar. - Record notices you have dismissed
- So a notice you close stays closed for the rest of the day. Saved under keys that start
record-banner:followed by the date. - The home screen hint
- Whether you dismissed the “Add to home screen” hint or installed the site, so it is not shown again. Saved under
install-hint, only once you answer it. - Pages and figures for offline use
- The site's offline helper (a service worker) keeps copies so pages still open without a connection. Pages you have opened, up to 40, are replaced with each new release. The latest live figures, up to 80 answers, are not tied to a release: each stays until newer answers push it out or you clear it. They include postcode lookups, whose addresses contain the first half of your postcode. Saved under
ued-pages-andued-data-v1in the browser’s cache storage.
None of this leaves your browser except for one lookup: to find your area, the first half of the postcode passes through our server to the Carbon Intensity API. We do not store it; our hosting provider’s request logs are kept for no more than a day, as the privacy notice explains.
Clearing it. Forget everything on My home deletes your postcode area, My home, the tool settings and the offline copies of postcode lookups. Your theme, dismissed notices, the home screen hint and other offline copies stay until you clear this site’s data in your browser’s settings, which removes everything listed here.
Why there is no consent banner
The law on cookies and similar storage, regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, asks for consent unless the storage is strictly necessary for the service you are using. Each item above exists only so the site works the way you set it, and none is used to track or profile you. Page views are counted by Vercel Web Analytics, which stores nothing on your device.
