The service

UK Energy Data is a free, independent information service about electricity in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). It is not connected to NESO, National Grid, Elexon, Ofgem or Octopus Energy. We provide it as it is and as available, with no promise that it is accurate, complete, up to date or suitable for any purpose.

Accuracy and limits

  • Live data comes from third parties, can be late, missing or revised, and is shown as they publish it. If a source fails, the page says so.
  • Price cap figures are Ofgem's published rates for the quarter shown, by region and by payment method (Direct Debit, paying on receipt of the bill, or prepayment), or the Great Britain Direct Debit average where a page says so. Your own tariff may differ.
  • Bill, carbon and savings figures are estimates. Do not rely on them alone for a financial or contractual decision; check with your supplier, a qualified adviser or Ofgem.
  • Articles in Insights and Energy saving are drafted by a language model from the past week's data and checked against it, as the about page explains.

Using what you find here

You are welcome to:

  • use the site for personal, educational, research and journalistic purposes;
  • quote our figures and analysis with credit to UK Energy Data and a link; the Cite button under a chart gives a ready-made citation;
  • download a chart's data as CSV where offered and reuse it, keeping the credit each source requires (see below);
  • embed the live carbon ribbon with the code on Green Signal, unchanged and with its link back.

Please do not:

  • copy, mirror or republish the site or its articles in bulk, or scrape it automatically, without our written permission;
  • present the site's tools or content as your own service, or sell access to them;
  • interfere with the site's security or operation, or use it in breach of UK law.

Who owns what

The site's design, code and original writing belong to its operator. The underlying data belongs to its publishers and is used under their licences, which also apply when you reuse it:

  • Carbon Intensity API (NESO, Environmental Defense Fund Europe, the University of Oxford and WWF): CC BY 4.0.
  • Elexon BMRS: BMRS data licence. Contains BMRS data © Elexon Limited copyright and database right 2026.
  • NESO Data Portal: NESO Open Data Licence. Supported by National Energy SO Open Data.
  • Ofgem and government statistics (DESNZ): Open Government Licence v3.0.
  • Our World in Data: CC BY 4.0.
  • Octopus Energy tariff rates: Octopus Energy's own terms. The heating oil price is BoilerJuice's published average, quoted with its date and a link.

The data sources page shows which source feeds which page.

Liability

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any loss caused by using the site or relying on its data, estimates or articles. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes go to its courts. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts.
