What we handle and why

Messages you send us
The contact form sends your name, email address and message to us through Formspree. We use them only to read and answer your message. Lawful basis: legitimate interests, in replying to people who write to us.
Page counts
Vercel Web Analytics counts page views without cookies. For each view it records the page, the referring site, your approximate location (country, region and city), and your browser, operating system and device type. To tell one visit from another it uses a code made from your request, which is discarded after 24 hours; we see only totals. The ribbon embedded on other websites is not counted. Lawful basis: legitimate interests, in knowing which pages are used.
Error reports
When a page breaks, your browser sends our server a short report: the error message, the page path (never the part after a "?"), the script file with its line and column, and your browser's name, such as Chrome. Browsers also send a report when a page tries to load something our security policy does not allow; we keep a short summary, with every address cut before any "?". Both go only to our hosting logs. Like any request to a website, they carry your IP address, which the logs may record. Lawful basis: legitimate interests, in keeping the site working and secure.
Your postcode
If you enter a postcode, only the first half (for example "M1") is used. It passes through our server to the Carbon Intensity API to find your network area. We do not store it; our hosting provider's request logs are kept for no more than one day. Your browser saves it with that area on your device so other pages can use it. On Green Signal it also appears in the page address, so a link you share opens on the same area. It covers thousands of addresses and does not identify you; you can clear it at any time. Lawful basis: legitimate interests, in showing the forecast you asked for.
My home and tool settings
If you use My home, the details you enter about your home (tariff, how you pay, yearly use, heating, electric car, solar panels, home battery) are stored only in your browser and are never sent to us or anyone else; the tools read them on your device. The Charge tonight planner and the solar export estimate also keep your last inputs in your browser. Forget everything on the My home page deletes these details, your postcode area and the offline copies of postcode lookups described below. It leaves your theme and the notices you have closed, which say nothing about you; clearing this site's data in your browser removes those too.
Offline copies
To keep working without a connection, the site's offline helper (a service worker) keeps copies in your browser's storage. Copies of pages you open, up to 40, are replaced with each new release. Copies of live figures are not: the latest answer from each data request a page made is kept, up to 80, until newer answers push it out or you clear it. Those include postcode lookups, whose addresses contain the first half of your postcode; Forget everything on My home deletes them. None of these copies leaves your device. To remove all of them, clear this site's data in your browser's settings.
Settings on your device
Your theme, your postcode area, the record notices you have dismissed and whether you have answered the home screen hint are kept in your browser's local storage. They never reach us. The cookies and storage page lists each one.
Calculator inputs
Figures you enter in the bill calculator are worked out in your browser and are not sent to us. Your payment method appears in the page address so the result can be shared.
Reminders and copying
If you set a Green Signal reminder, your browser asks your permission to show notifications. Reminders are timed in the open tab and stop when you leave the page or close it; nothing is sent to us. Copy buttons put text on your clipboard only when you press them, and the site never reads your clipboard.

Services that process it for us

Formspree, Inc. (United States)
Receives contact form messages and passes them to us. Formspree is not certified under the UK–US data bridge; it states that it relies on standard contractual clauses for transfers from the UK and EU, and we use it under its data processing terms. See Formspree's privacy policy.
Vercel Inc. (United States)
Hosts the site, runs our server functions and their logs, and provides the page counts. Vercel is certified under the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework (the UK–US data bridge). See Vercel's privacy notice.

Data sources your browser contacts

Live figures are fetched by your browser directly from Elexon (data.elexon.co.uk), NESO (api.neso.energy) and Octopus Energy (api.octopus.energy). Carbon Intensity API figures come through our own server, which keeps a short-lived copy so the API is not asked the same question by every visitor; one early request on the home page goes to api.carbonintensity.org.uk directly. Like any website, these services can see your IP address, and their own privacy policies apply. We send them nothing about you except the first half of a postcode you enter, which goes to the Carbon Intensity API to find your network area.

How long we keep it

  • Contact messages: deleted 12 months after the conversation ends.
  • Server logs, including error and security reports: kept by Vercel for no more than one day, then deleted. We do not copy them elsewhere.
  • Page counts: the 24-hour visit code is discarded; the totals that remain cannot identify you and are kept by Vercel.
  • Settings and offline copies on your device: until you clear this site's data in your browser. Forget everything on My home deletes your home details, postcode area, tool inputs and offline postcode lookups at once.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it, delete it or restrict how we use it. You can also object to our using it on the basis of legitimate interests. Contact us as above; we will answer within one month.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days and deal with it without undue delay. You can also complain to the UK regulator, the Information Commission (still known as the ICO), at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
